Insurance Information
Every SmartCar rental includes full basic coverage. This page explains exactly what is covered, what your deductible is, and what optional extras are available.
1. Basic Insurance Coverage — Included in Every Rental
The following coverage is automatically included — at no extra charge:
- ✓Mandatory third-party liability insurance under the Israeli Motor Vehicle Insurance Law, 1975 — unlimited personal injury coverage for third parties
- ✓Basic comprehensive insurance — covers vehicle damage from accidents, fire, and theft, subject to the deductible
- ✓Third-party property damage coverage — up to the limit defined in the policy
Coverage applies to the primary driver and any additional driver approved and listed in the rental agreement. An unlisted driver is not covered.
2. Deductible (השתתפות עצמית)
In any case of vehicle damage, theft or accident — the deductible is the amount you are responsible to pay, even when the basic insurance covers the remainder of the damage. The deposit held on your credit card is intended to cover the deductible if needed.

3. Collision Damage Waiver (CDW) — Optional Add-on

What is included:
- ✓Reduces your deductible to zero (₪0) for Type A damage
- ✓Accident damage on the road (collision with a post, parking damage, traffic accidents)
- ✓Unintentional fire damage
- ✓Damage from external objects (branches, stones)
- ✓Partial or full vehicle theft (subject to police report)*
- ✓Full peace of mind throughout the rental period
- * Theft coverage is subject to policy conditions and is not guaranteed in all circumstances — full details in the rental agreement.
⚠️ Even with CDW — the following are NOT covered:
- ✗Intentional damage or gross negligence
- ✗Driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs (DUI)
- ✗Driving outside Israel without prior written authorisation
- ✗Damage to tyres, wheels, external mirrors, roof and underbody (without special upgrade)
- ✗A driver not listed in the rental agreement
4. Third-Party Liability (Compulsory Insurance)
Compulsory Israeli insurance is governed by the Motor Vehicle Insurance Law (Road Accident Victims), 5735-1975. Every rental vehicle includes full coverage:
- ✓Unlimited personal injury compensation for road accident victims — drivers, passengers, pedestrians
- ✓Compensation for medical expenses, lost earnings, and pain & suffering per statute
- ✓Third-party property damage liability up to the limit defined in the policy
- ✓Coverage applies throughout Israel — including urban roads, highways, and industrial areas
5. What Is Not Covered — In All Cases
In any of the following cases — insurance coverage is void and full financial liability falls on the renter:
- ✗Driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs (DUI) — Also subject to separate criminal proceedings
- ✗Driving outside Israel without prior written authorisation — Jordan, Egypt — require separate policy
- ✗Unlisted/unauthorised driver (not named in the agreement) — Including spouse or family member if not listed
- ✗Commercial use (taxi, Uber, Bolt) — Breach of rental terms
- ✗Off-road or unsurfaced terrain driving — Regardless of vehicle type
- ✗Towing a trailer without explicit written authorisation
- ✗Damage caused while parked illegally — e.g., on a kerb, rock
- ✗Keys left in the vehicle when stolen — Gross negligence
- ✗Interior smoke damage — Minimum ₪500 cleaning fee
6. Required Documents at Pickup
All documents must be originals — photocopies, including phone photos, are not accepted.
ID / Passport
Israeli residents: ID card. Tourists: valid passport.
Original valid driving licence
Must remain valid throughout the rental. Minimum 24 months of experience required.
Credit card in your name
Required for the deposit hold. Debit cards are not accepted. Visa and Mastercard are accepted.
International Driving Permit (tourists only)
Required in addition to your national licence for non-Israeli licence holders. Obtainable from your home country.
